Here it is at last: the Big Set update for GDEMU. The Full PAL Set + American exclusives + Japanese exclusives + the best indie games + the best ports + Dreamcast utilities… and a whole lot more. (Phew… I finally managed to finish that sentence!)

For the newcomers, here’s a quick reminder: What exactly is the Big Set?

It’s a 220 GB zipped folder that you download and drop onto a 512 GB SD card formatted in FAT32. Once unzipped, the folder more than doubles in size, reaching over 440 GB. This compilation is obviously aimed at Dreamcast owners running GDEMU (i.e. with an Optical Drive Emulator). You’ll find plenty of information about this very simple mod right here on the site. What makes the Big Set different from other classic (and sometimes paid 😉) full sets is that it runs on the latest version of the Open Menu interface. Please stop using that old GDMenu already, it’s 2026!

Another key point: the Big Set is completely free. I think that’s already a major plus considering the amount of work I put into it, haha! But there are other important things worth highlighting. First I’ll list what’s new in this update, then I’ll recap the other key features that were already present in the base version of this Open Menu distribution. A little refresher course, if you will.

In this definitive version, I believe the most important addition is without a doubt the new folder-based sorting system. But you won’t have to do anything: every game is already organized. Much easier to find what you’re looking for. Clean, tidy, and coherent. On top of that, I’ve added the Dreamkey theme I created for this folder system, which has been very well received, especially on Dreamcast Talk.

As usual, the Folders section and the theme are applied via the Start menu in Open Menu.

Big Set summary:

The Big Set is “simply” the Full PAL Set, but with all the US exclusives, the playable Japanese exclusives (language issues aside), the translated Japanese exclusives, the best indie games, and the best ports. At the end of the set you’ll find all the essential utilities: Code Breaker, VMU Explorer, Dreamkey 3.0, 240p Test Suite, and so on. There are also two music playlists and a few prototypes. You’ll probably notice some “duplicates”. They’re not really duplicates: some PAL games simply aren’t 60 Hz compatible, or even VGA compatible in certain cases, so I included the different versions of those games as well. One last reminder: every game is in GDI format. We’re not throwing around CDIs just to artificially save space and claim we have the biggest… well, you know. Quality comes first.

The Big Set interface:

This is one of the signatures of Dreamcastfrench distributions: the compilations run under Open Menu. More modern, better looking, more complete and fully customizable, Open Menu is currently the best interface for your GDEMU. Everything can be modified via the START menu. VMU Pro and VM2 are fully compatible, as are all peripherals. There are currently three main original themes, plus several other very nice default themes included in Open Menu:

• Line Desc: Each game has a descriptive card with its region of origin, the rating given by Dreamcast Junkyard, a short synopsis covering the game’s strengths and weaknesses (when it’s bad, we say it), the number of VMU blocks required, and the maximum number of players.
• Grid: A clean grid view. Games are displayed by their covers only, no extra text.
• Folders: The new organization system created and refined by Derek Pascarella. Games are sorted into folders and subfolders. In the Big Set, the structure looks like this:

On the visual / artistic side, I’ve kept the three historic Dreamcastfrench themes: Miss Ess, Ivy, and Yukawa.

From now on, I will no longer be updating the Big Set. Dreamcast ports keep coming, but I can’t completely rebuild the entire set for every single new game. You’ll now need to use GDMenu Card Manager to add future titles (and there will definitely be more 😊). Remember that you must use the special Dreamcastfrench version of GDMenu Card Manager to update your Open Menu. Only that version has all the custom content built into it. You’ll find it in the Big Tools suite, also available for download on the Dreamcastfrench Archive.org page.

For language switching, it’s the same as before. For French/English, there’s a small folder at the end of the setlist, in the root of your SD card. I’ve included a little text file to guide you, but basically you just need to change the content of the “01” folder. That’s the one that controls the entire setlist and its conditions. 😉 By default, the Big Set is in English..

I honestly believe that today, the Big Set is the best setlist available for a GDEMU Dreamcast. Modern, pleasant to use, choice of several visual styles (with or without info), folder sorting system, full compatibility with VM2 and VMU Pro… and all of it completely free. Right now I genuinely don’t see a better system out there.
